Human Facial Anatomy and Expressions, and how they can be Realistically Represented using Computer Graphics

Facial animation is the most important part of character animation, and realistic and natural expression of emotions is one of the most important parts of animating a believable character. This, however, is also one of the most challenging aspects of animating a character. The human face is one of the most interesting and intricate parts of the human body. We can detect even the subtlest change of expression within the face, and its familiarity allows us to recognise one face out of a sea of hundreds that we come into contact with every day. In order to successfully animate facial expressions and emotion, a thorough understanding of the human facial muscular structure and how expressions are formed is necessary.

Giving Up

An exploration into the emotions of discouragement and the problems faced by those dealing with the discouraged. An attempt to find, between the audience and the animated characters, a common ground in which the audience can connect and care for the characters emotional well-being. Also an attempt to offer understanding to those in the audience who have experienced discouragement. A 2D-animated short entitled ‘Giving Up’.

At Least I’m Alive

Group project with Matthew Stevens and Mandy King Wong, researching animaton for children. The group presented a verbal report of which there is not record. See the final animation in Matthew Steven’s section.

Animating expression with Carnival Albert

For this project, my aim is to produce a series of short animations, each conveying different expressions, applying animation principles to a character, which is limited in the way it can express itself. (i.e. the character will be almost an inanimate object). The character will be modeled and animated using the Maya software package.

Traditional 2D Animation

The aim of the project was to research and acquire an understanding of the main principles of animation and to experiment and execute several short animations of a simple character, with a focus on the movement and performance, using the medium of traditional 2D animation.

Real-Time Character Animation for Computer Games

The importance of real-time character animation in computer games has increased considerably over the past decade. Due to advances in computer hardware and the achievement of great increases in computational speed, the demand for more realism in computer games is continuously growing.
